Eczema

Eczema is a general term for the inflammation of the superficial layer, epidermis, of skin. It is also known as dermatitis or atopic dermatitis. Eczema can appear on any part of the body. Usually acute inflammation of the skin is referred as dermatitis while chronic infection is known as eczema. Many eczema patients have associated hay fever and asthma.

What causes eczema?

As per the latest researches, it is concluded that eczema is caused by a combination of various genetic and/or environmental factors. Eczema is more common in children than in adults. As this skin disorder is co related with genetics, if one or both the parents have the disease, there are increased chances of child having eczema. There are a number of triggers for eczema. They may not be the cause of the disease but can flare up the disease. The triggers vary for each person. Some of the triggers are mentioned below:

  • Irritants: Soaps, detergents, shampoos, make-up, perfume, cigarette smoke.
  • Foods: Dairy products like milk, cheese and others, eggs, nuts and seeds, soy products and wheat.
  • Microbial infections: Infections that effect the immune system of body like cold and flu, bacterial infection of Staphylococcus aureus, viruses and certain fungi can trigger dermatitis.
  • Hot and cold temperatures: Hot weather, high and low humidity, perspiration from exercise, getting chilled after sweating, prolonged exposure to water may trigger eczema.
  • Stress: Stress can  trigger eczema.
  • Allergens: Pets, pollens, mold, dust mites, dandruff are common eczema allergens.
  • Hormones: Many females experience worsening of symptoms of eczema at a certain fixed time of their menstrual cycle. It can also occur during pregnancy. This is because of hormonal changes in them.

Symptoms of Eczema

Patients of eczema often experience periods of time when their symptoms will get worse, followed by periods of time when their symptoms will be better the severity of symptoms can vary in the same person. Most people develop atopic dermatitis in childhood and it continues upto adulthood if not managed properly. Eczema is characterized by one or more symptoms listed below:
Itching - The itching can be intense. The skin often gets damaged during eczema due to scratching.
Scaling: The skin becomes rough, scaly in appearance.
Redness: Due to inflammation the affected e affected area may become red. it may bleed and appear blotchy.
Blisters: Sometimes fluid filled blisters may be present in eczema. They may ooze and form crusts.
Cracks: Painful, deep cracks, also called fissures are a sign of severe infection.

Tests for eczema

Clinical symptoms are the homeopath’s best guide to diagnose eczema. Positive family history further confirms the diagnosis. There is no single test that is used in order to diagnose eczema. Allergy test- Skin allergy testing may be carried out to investigate potential eczema cases.
Skin prick testing: A needle containing a small amount of a suspected substance pricks the skin to test for allergies that do not necessarily occur on the skin, such as pollen or food.
Supervised food challenges: Some substances are removed and others are added in diet to find out the Allergan.
For the purpose of study eczema can be broadly divided into acute form and chronic form.
Acute Eczema:Acute eczema is of recent onset, it may be referred as dermatitis. In t intense in this form of eczema, severe inflammation leads to the formation of little blisters (vesicles) in the skin, that itch and are scratched open, leading to weeping and the ‘flowing out’ of fluid.
Chronic Eczema: This is less exudative. It is usually dry. Scaly, pigmented and thickened. Usually presents with lichenification- a dry leathery thickened state, with increased skin markings.

Management of eczema with homeopathy

Homeopathy provides the best treatment for eczema. Eczema requires constitutional treatment to strengthen the immune system, which is best done with homeopathy.
Baby Eczema: It is also called atopic dermatitis or infant eczema. Baby eczema is common and easily treated. Eczema in babies presents as reddish patches on skin. It may appear anywhere on a baby's body, eczema most often occurs on a baby's cheeks and at the joints of their arms and legs. The triggers for eczema in infants are mostly the same as those described above, dry skin, irritants, sweat and heat often cause eczema.
Arsenicum Album:Intense itching. Skin dry as paper. Flaking. Pussy. Small vesicles. Eczema worst on uncovered parts or areas. Restless and anxious patient.
Eczema is better by hot bathing.
Graphites: the skin is leathery, it oozes honey like substance. Slow healing eczema.
Thickened skin. Deep cracks in fingers, heels, etc. nails thick. Grooved.
Natrum Muriaticum: Small itchy blisters with corrosive fluid; skin becomes red, raw, inflamed. The eruptions are mostly seen on the margins of hair; bends of joints, behind ears. Aggravated by exposure to sun.
Petroleum-Red, raw, moist surface: burning and itching: oozing after scratching.
Deep cracks in folds, fingers which bleed easily. Eruptions are worse in the winters.
Sulphur: Unhealthy skin. Moist, weeping eruptions, foul odor. Intensely itchy; scratches till it bleeds, causing burning. Skin bleeds easily.

Characteristics and guiding symptoms of some medicines used in this disease are described below

Alumina: Eczema on scalp and nails. It appears periodically, especially in winter. Skin dry, it feels as if egg is dried on the surface of the skin. Eruptions are moist, scabby and scurfy with gnawing itching sensation. Easily bleeds when scratched. Agg. Evening, alternate day,
patient’s heat of bed, full and new moon, potatoes.
Individualistic Amelioration Open air and washing with cold water. The patient is chilly. Difficult stool and urine. Paralytic weakness.
Dulcamara: Eczema on scalp, cheeks forehead, chin and extremities. Vesicles with suppuration and thick brown or yellowish crust. Agg. - exercise and warmth. Amel.- Cold application and before menses. The patient is chilly. General causation and agg. from the Autumn and sudden cold after heat.
Graphites: Affected on skin, vertex, scalp, ears, extremities and around the anus. Extreme dryness of skin. Foul acrid glue discharge. Agg.- heat. Amel. Cold. The patient is chilly, fat, tendency to cracking skin and constipated.
Hepar sulph: Eczema on scalp, genitals, folds of scrotum and thigh. It is oversensitive to touch with thin, acrid and offensive discharge. Agg. - touch, cold application and rising in moming. Amel.- warmth. The patient is very chilly, angry and oversensitive.
Lycopodium: Eczema on back of head and hands with thick crusts, easily bleeds foetid discharge and violent itch. Agg.- 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and getting heated. Amel.- Cold air and
uncovering the affected parts. The patient is chilly, greedy, lazy, miser and fearful.
Mezerium: Eczema on scalp, nose and back. Vesicles full of serous exudation. Honey-like crust and purulent exudates. Agg.-cold application. Amel.- warmth. Petroleum - Eczema on occiput, scrotum, thigh, back of hands, webs of toes, face and neck with thick crust, profuse discharge, excoriating. Agg.-winter. Amel.- washing with cold water. The patient is chilly.
Psorinum: Affected parts: ears, scalp, bends of elbows and face. Eruption ditty, crusty, very
painful, intense itching and very offensive discharge. Agg.- winter, cold and change of weather. Amel.- warmth, warm clothing and summer. The patient is chilly. Sepia - Eczema on face, vertex, occiput and bends of joints. Eruptions with very much offensive pus-like discharge. Agg. open air. Amel.- warmth and warm room. The patient is chilly, sad and weepy. Aversion to milk.

Diet and Regimen

• Avoid Milk, sweet, beef, hilsha, brown puty fish, bean, bringal
